Charles R. Smith Jr. , award-winning and best selling children’s author, photographer, and poet was selected as the 2017 Artist-in-Residence. He will spend a week at Northside Elementary School in Orange County, North Carolina. Smith is the author of many critically acclaimed titles including Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration title My People, Coretta Scott King Honor Author Award title Twelve Rounds to Glory, 28 Days, and Brick by Brick, among others.
Charles describes himself as an author, photographer, poet, and Mixed Martial Arts coach. He believes in a strong focus on the connections between Body, Mind, and Spirit.
Charles is experienced at author visits and educational engagement. He has worked with students ranging from grades K–12. His programs typically focus on poetry, photography, or a mixture of both.
Charles’ program at Northside Elementary will be titled “I am Me” and will focus on writing exercises that emphasize descriptive language and personal identity. As part of the program, he will work with the writers to take pictures of themselves and their classmates. These portraits will be incorporated into the final production of “I am” poems by all the students.
