Matt de la Peña, 2016 John Newbery Medal Winner and New York Times bestselling author, was selected to to be the first Susan Steinfirst Artist-in-Residence.  He spent a week as an artist-in-residence at Mt. Vernon Middle School in Wake County, North Carolina.  De la Peña is the author of six critically-acclaimed young adult novels, including Mexican WhiteBoy, The Living, and The Hunted, as well as two picture books. He won the Newbery Medal in January 2016 for his most recent picture book, Last Stop on Market Street. Illustrated by Christian Robinson, the book was also named a Randolph Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Book Award honoree.

De la Peña also delivered the 2016 Susan Steinfirst Memorial Lecture on March 13, 2016 at the Main Branch of the Durham County Library.   Durham County Library encourages Discovery, Connects the Community and Leads in Literacy.  By partnering with Durham County Library, the Susan Steinfirst lecture reached a broad and diverse audience.
